UPDATES

Lot's happening here:

• New Oily Comics are available in the shop by Melissa Mendes, Max de Radigués, Jessica Campbell, and myself. Please order some. We need to buy ice cream and cat food. Just kidding. We are fine.
• I made a very simple Oily Comics site and bought the domain of oilycomics.com. Go there and look. It's B & W.
• CAKE is happening next week. We are driving all the way to Chicago. Come buy some comics from us. I'm on a panel as well. Gross.
• I went to the Albany Comic Con today and just made a ton of posts on my tumblr about it and all the crap I bought. Go look! Speaking of which, if you don't follow my tumblr, please do. I feel like I use it a lot more than this blog now. While I don't want to abandon blogger just yet, Tumblr is just so sticky and fun.
• Melissa and I saw a white spider eating a fly. No pictures. Sorry.
• We saw Prometheus. We were entertained.
• You can now buy The End of the Fucking World in digital form (PDF, ePub) and read it on your iPad, Android thingy, or your computer. I'm serious. I love technology. If I had an iPad I would be reading comics on it. 

OILY at TCAF 2012

Table 102 between to Secret Acres and One Percent Press is where you can find Oily Comics Books and friends such as Alex Kim, Sean Ford, Melissa Mendes and Joseph Lambert. New stuff we'll have at TCAF are The End of the Fucking World #7, Lou #3 and an interview zine with Noah Van Sciver.
Also, we'll have the brand new Sundays #5 edited by Sean Ford who will be signing his new tome, Only Skin at the Secret Acres table. We'll also have copies of the brand new Snake Oil #7 published by Retrofit Comics who will also be at the show with a ton of great comics. We'll also have some prints including a brand new Tyrant print by Steve Bissette and colored by me (chuck forsman).

We've noticed that ever since we started signing our comics "Charles Forsman" that people are now calling us that as opposed to "Chuck." That is totally fine but I really don't care. If you called me Chuck before then keep doing so. Only my mother and the state of California call me Charles.

I have a cold as I type this. I really hope I recover by this weekend. Nothing worse then travelling and selling comics while ill.  Despite that I have a ton of enthusiasm going for this trip to Toronto. I can't wait to see new and old friends. These shows means lot more to me ever since we moved out to the country. It's pretty amazing to get all these like-minded folks together. Makes me feel okay.

TEOTFW #5

Hi Friends of the Snake Oil Comics Society,

I have completed issue 5 of The End of the Fucking World. It is on its wat to several comics shops and available in the Oily Shop right now.  Thanks to everyone that is reading along. Thankfully this comic is still fun for me to make and hasn't become a 'thing.'  That was the goal when I did the first issue. I just wanted to play and not worry about it so much.  so yeah. This summer is looking to be full of conventions and fun. I am also working on Snake Oil #7. I am about 20 pages deep. That will be published by good 'ol Retrofit comics this summer. By y'all.

Redrawing The Revival

Saw Michael Litven someone copied a random Tatsumi page as an exercise.
Thought it was a cool idea so I spent my day redrawing a page from James Sturm's The Revival. The Revival is a haunting and fucking powerful comic. I was just flipping through it and counted the pages. It is only 24 pages long! When I think about that comic it is so detailed and moving for me that it felt like a much longer work. Amazing that he could do what he did in 24 pages. Buy The Revival.

Lena Forever Page number six

So I have book working on a new book. It's called Lena Forever. This is page 6 I think. I have to fix the counter and the cabinets. It's all wonky. I think I am going to release this as 3 issues or 6 issues. It'll be pretty long. I hope I can stick with it. I've got it all pretty planned out with thumbnails done on the first third. I started doing some final pages. I would love to have something ready to show at SPX but probably not until the Brooklyn show in December. crap I gotta go deliver some beer. I'm late. I might post again tomorrow with another page. We are moving next week and I have been trying to draw and pack so I don't lose momentum on this project. I'm going to aggressively look for a publisher for this project in hopes that I will be paid money to draw it. That would make my day. I'll post random pages as I finish them. eat my shorts.

Little Drawings for sale

I did two little drawings to help offset the cost of keeping the oily boutique online.  They are cheap!  10 dollars a pop.  One is of one of my favorite film directors, Jim Jarmusch. I gave him blue skin for some reason.  And the other is my depiction of a creature known as a Melon Head.  You can buy them at the oily boutique right now.  We have lots of comics still for sale up there as well.  Melissa's  Freddy: More Stories comic is amazing.  I would recommend picking one of those up if you haven't.

MoCCA/Caboose/Taffy Hips

Hey women and men,

Mocca is coming is a couple of days.  I'll be at table G12 with my usual crowd.  I'll have Snake Oil 1-5.

Also look for my editing and comics in the Caboose paper I did with my buddy Max about the town we live in, White River Junction.  We picked up the books today.  it was awesome and relieving to have it in our hands.  We put all 3000 in my civic and we hauled them into White River.  It was a beautiful day.

Also, I just found out that I am in TAFFY HIPS #7 which is also debuting at MoCCA.  This is the cover.  I'm very excited to see this.

did another one of these silly strips.  don't have any reason for doing them.  they are just for fun.  sometimes i really miss drawing darryl and getting inside his selfish teenaged mind.  plus i was reading krazy kat when i drew these and i think that is coming through.  i just need a stand-in for officah pup and i'll be set.

dear diary,

i've been working on a new story after giving up on 2 others.  it's amazing how much unusable stuff i have generated int he last 4 months.  it's not all unusable i guess.  i think i have a good character or two but their story either grows too big for what i had intended or i start to feel like i am preaching or something.  i also think i am jumping into the deep end without properly blowing up my inflatable shark.  i think it's really important for myself to reaaaaallly work out my plans before i start final pages.  but who knows. it might be because it's finally spring and i am feeling youthful again.

just got Urasawa'a Pluto vol 5.  finished it last night.  like the best hollywood movie but.  i kind of feel like urasawa approaches his character design in a very classic cartooner sort of way.  in the spirit of peanuts or matt groening.  all his characters have very similar facial features but with slight variations and different haircuts.

I also want to work for Viz now and be the guy doing all the lettering and sound effects and filling in the holes.  they do a decent job now but i feel like someone could really make it more seamless and invisible to the reader.  viz,  call me.

oh yeah. almost forgot.  going to be at mocca this weekend. sundays table G-12. nothing new from me really except for the Caboose paper i edited and have some work in.  if you don't have wolf come get one. just printed off a bunch more.  4 bucks.  it's the best 20 pages of sad pathetic fat guy comics money can buy. really!

oh and everyone should shake hands with my bro James Sturm and check out his new book Market Day. I know i am preaching to the choir here but James has built a really personal multilayered book.  i got this past friday and have read it twice and i feel like there are still themes and feelings that are being played with and tugged on that keeps me coming back.  it's a pretty simple story on the surface but you can really feel the weight of the world on the main character, Mendleman.  my favorite kind of story.  feel that weight!

my good buddies sean and alex will both have new books at mocca as well.  they are inspiring.

Caboose is done

Max and I have been busting our butts to get Caboose done for the printers and then on to Mocca next week.  The plates are mad and it's in God's hands now. here is the cover by max and i.

UPPDates

Snake Oil #4 is now available to read online. Just click over to the right on the sidebar or on this purple panel.



And the Oily Boutique is now fully a Big Cartel store.  Look for some new original art for sale there by myself and Melissa Mendes.  We are trying offset the cost of the new store by selling at least one $10 original drawing per month.

In other news, I killed my main website.  This is the main source again.  Hope you like.

New Day Rising

So if you are reading this via an RSS reader, I encourage you to come to the real place because I have changed the way it looks.  I think its  a little uglier but  a whole lot cleaner.  Plus I am adding lots of comics to read for free.  Check out the sidebar to your right.  You will see Snake Oil 1-5 listed plus some other stories.  Click on them and read some comics.  The main reason for this redesign was to accommodate bigger images so I could put my comics up so you don't have to enlarge anything to read.  Just a straight read from beginning to end.  No clicking.  I have been thinking about putting more of my comics up for free for a while but after seeing the What Things Do site I saw the light.  Snake Oil 1-3 are online right now.  More to come soonish.

Also I am probably going to abandon my other site as I am trying to cut my costs and I feel like it didn't do too much for my fledgling freelance career(which i don't really mind–I'd rather be drawing comics anyway).  I am also going to move the oily boutique to a big cartel store.  I freaking love these store. so easy to set up and easy for people to use.  I have the latest products up there right now. SEE IT.

Wolf in colors

I ran out of the original covers for wolf which means i forced about 100 of these on to 100 poor mothersuckers so far.  But I am not stopping there.  I needed to screenprint more covers and i realized that i had a bunch of this variety pack paper sitting in a box and decided to put it to use.  Now you can read wolf like it's a late nineties iMac.  My favorite is the Bondi Blue.

Remember you can buy wolf from me at the oily boutique along with lots of other things or comic shops in the big cities should have a few.

Royal Jelly

Maybe I am crazy but I haven't seen these video around the usual comic haunts online.  I have no idea who is producing these but its a really cool idea.  from what i gather, royal jelly sends little Mino cameras to cartoonists and asks them to film themselves and their surrounding while asking questions over skype.  I just watched the Sammy Harkham/John Pham videos.  It's very cool to see them in their studio talking intelligently about cartooning.  In addition to that one they have interviews with Paul Hornschemier, Lisa Hanawalt, and fucking Tim Hensley.  I am really looking forward to watching the latter.
